Live and study in Reutlingen
This guide was assembled by first-semester students (BSc Production Management) within the framework of the course “learn and creativity techniques” of Prof. Dr. Stephan Hoefer (2007).
Dear (future) fellow students,
It is our aim to provide you with all the information useful for your first semester. We have tried to put it all in a nutshell, all the information it took us so long to gather when we started our studies here ourselves – from students for students!
To have decided for Reutlingen University was a good choice since not only the university has repeatedly achieved good positions in rankings but also Reutlingen and its surroundings are a good place to live.
Reutlingen has more than 110 000 inhabitants and situated about 30 kilometres south of Stuttgart close to the Swabian Alps. Many companies active on the international market, such as Bosch, Willi Betz, Stoll, Rieber, Kullen, Burkhardt und Weber are situated here.
There is a lot to see in the surroundings and a great variety of leisure activities can be pursued such as hiking in the Alps, sightseeing at Lichtenstein castle or climbing in the nearby climbing park. Indoor and outdoor swimming pools in Reutlingen and the neighbouring cities invite for a swim. There are museums, a theatre and cinemas, which can all be visited by students at reduced prices.

There are 16 children in each group in the kindergarten. Opening hours are Mo-Thu 7.30-18 hrs and Fri 7.30-15:30 hrs. The places are allotted each year. The Reutlingen region is an industrial centre at the foot of the Swabian Alps, it offers a big variety of jobs to be had next to your studies. The university is often offered jobs for student assistants. Moreover, temporary work can be had during the vacations. Of course there are, as in any city, possibilities of getting a job at a pub, a gas station or some shop. Often job offers are placed on notice board in the corridors. Big companies in the region are Robert Bosch GmbH, Hugo Boss and Walter AG.
Reutlingen University is located at the outskirts of Reutlingen. There are bus stops close to the campus, which bring the students into the city centre. The central bus station is only a 5 minutes walk from the train station. Reutlingen is well-connected by train to Tübingen and Stuttgart. Also the airport can be reached in only 30 minutes by car or by the Expresso bus with shuttles between Reutlingen and the airport. A student ticket can be bought for 55,40 € per semester at all places that sell naldo-tickets. With this ticket you can use public transport in the whole naldo-area:www.naldo.de.
Reutlingen offers a number of places of cultural interest, most of them are located in the city centre. There is a museum of local history, an art and natural history museum, historical fountains and parts of the city wall, as well as different theatres. If you are interested in these or in getting to know where the smallest street of the world (Guiness book of records) is located, you can participate in a guided tour through the city.

Further places worth visiting are close by. The Lichtenstein castle, Hohenzollern castle, the stud of Marbach, Bad Urach, Tübingen and many more. For movie enthusiasts, Reutlingen has the Planie cinema centre and there are many cinemas in Tübingen and Metzingen, too.
Reutlingen has several bigger discos: The M-Park, Färberei 4, P&K, club Mea and die Zelle. In addition there are many bars and pubs, mostly in the city centre. For gamblers there are opportunities to play billiards, snooker or dart, e.g. at the Ambiente, Woodys, City-Bowling or the Shooters in Pfullingen.
Tübingen and Stuttgart can be reach by bus or train within a short time. The surrounding villages of Reutlingen are – on weekends and holidays – also reachable by night-busses. Therefore it is no problem to live outside the city. Not to be forgotten are the parties on campus, which are usually organised by student groups. More information about locations and events can be found at: www.party-reutlingen.de.
